Recorded in September 2022 in \u00c9pila, at the Palacio del Conde de Aranda, \u201cAt His Most Gracious Majesty’s pleasure\u201d explores some of the music that was surely played at the court of Frederick II the Great of Prussia.<\/p>\n
A controversial statesman who laid the foundations for the Prussian state \u2013 the seed of what would eventually become modern Germany \u2013, Frederick the Great was not only a bellicose ruler with expansionist ambitions unmatched in Europe at the time, but also a skilled flute player who surrounded himself with the best musicians and composers of the era at his court in Berlin. Among many others, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Joachim Quantz, or Carl Heinrich Graun served there. In addition, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg dedicated works to prominent members of the court. As for Georg Philipp Telemann, Quantz frequently expressed his admiration for the Magdeburg composer, who was considered for decades to be Germany’s most important composer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A great variety of compositional resources, diversity of tempi <\/em>and instrumental techniques, such as pizzicati <\/em>or the use of mutes in the string instruments can be observed, all at the service of an emotive exegesis of the text. Besides strings, the lamentations often include other instruments that help to reinforce the feeling of affliction, as is the case of flutes, an instrument closely linked to this type of repertoire due to the association of its tone with mourning. These musicians were very much influenced by Neapolitan authors such as Leonardo Vinci, Francesco Durante or Leonardo Leo, whose music enjoyed a wide diffusion throughout the whole Hispanic world during the first half of the 18th Century.
